Breast Lift

Breast LiftBreasts will change over time, normally due to pregnancy, aging, gravity and weight changes. These changes result in the breasts losing their shape and firmness, causing them to sag or droop. A breast lift, also known as mastopexy, is a procedure that Dr. McHugh can perform to restore the shape and firmness of the breast.

During a breast lift, excess skin is removed and the breast tissue is reshaped. The skin is then tightened around this tissue to create a more youthful breast profile.

During your consultation, Dr. McHugh will determine if you are a good candidate for the breast lift procedure. Good candidates are generally those who are in good health, non-smokers and have reasonable expectations for the outcome of the procedure. In addition to answering all of your questions, Dr. McHugh will review your goals and discuss what options you may have available in regards to breast lift surgery.

Discomfort around the incision sites is to be expected following the procedure. These sites will generally heal in 5-10 days, when sutures are removed. Dr. McHugh may recommend wearing a support bra for the first two weeks after breast lift surgery to support the breasts during the healing stage. It may take several weeks for the swelling to subside.

In the following months, you will notice your new breast shape and position beginning to settle, yielding the final results.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Are there risks involved with breast lift surgery?
As with any surgery, there is also a risk of experiencing complications. Some risks may include a delay in the healing of the wound and scars. Dr. McHugh will go over all possible risks and complications prior to the procedure to ensure you have the necessary information to make the best decision possible.
  2. Does a breast lift affect my ability to nurse?
No, you should still have the ability to breastfeed if you become pregnant.
  3. Are the results long-lasting?
Results of a breast lift are not permanent. Over time, your breasts begin to sag or droop due to age, gravity or changes in weight.
  4. Are the scars permanent?
Yes, the scars are permanent; however, over time, they may begin to fade.
  5. I’ve had a breast lift, and now I’m pregnant. What will happen now?
If you are considering future pregnancies, Dr. McHugh recommends postponing a breast lift until after having children. Becoming pregnant can counteract the results you were trying to attain with breast lift surgery, as the skin around your breasts will stretch and lead to sagging.
