Breast Reduction

Breast ReductionExcessively large breasts can not only leave women with self-confidence issues, but it can also bring on physical pain and discomfort. Fortunately, Dr. McHugh can perform breast reduction, or reduction mammaplasty, to reduce the size of the breasts to a size more proportionate for your body and help alleviate the pain associated with this condition.

In breast reduction surgery, the breasts are resized through the removal of excess fat and tissue in the breasts. Often, the areolas are reduced and nipples are repositioned after the remaining breast tissue has been reshaped.

While a viable surgery for all ages, breast reduction surgery produces the best results when the breasts are already fully developed. Women who are in good health and non-smokers are suitable candidates for this type of surgery. Dr. McHugh will review your expectations and answer any questions during your initial consultation.

Following breast reduction surgery, you may experience swelling and discomfort around the incision sites. This is normal and can be controlled with the proper medication. Dr. McHugh may prescribe wearing a support bra in the week or two following the procedure to help stabilize the results. In the following weeks, the swelling should subside and your final results will become more visible.

If you feel your life is being limited due to discomfort and pain associated with enlarged breasts, contact Dr. McHugh in Houston, TX to schedule a consultation and hear how breast reduction surgery can improve your lifestyle.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Are there any risks involved with breast reduction surgery?
Any surgery will involve some sort of risk. Common complications associated with breast reduction are bleeding, infection and open areas near incision sites. Your risk may increase depending on your current state of health. Dr. McHugh will review all of these risks with you during your consultation.
  2. Will I have any permanent scars?
The scars from breast reduction surgery are permanent; however, they are usually in an inconspicuous area that can be hidden under clothing. Over time, your scars may begin to fade as well.
  3. If I get pregnant, will I still be able to nurse?
An extensive amount of breast tissue is removed in breast reduction surgery, and this may include some milk ducts that contribute to breast feeding. Therefore, future nursing may not be possible.
  4. Can my breasts return to their original size after the surgery?
No, the excess tissue is surgically removed from the breast, so they will not return to their original size.
  5. Am I too young to have a breast reduction?
There is no ideal age for having a breast reduction, although Dr. McHugh recommends that your breasts are fully developed before considering this procedure.
