Cosmetic Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid SurgeryAlso called blepharoplasty, eyelid surgery can correct drooping eyelids, puffiness around the eyes and improve vision. For those of Asian descent, this procedure can also add an upper eyelid crease. During the procedure, Dr. McHugh will remove fat and excess skin and muscle from the upper and/or lower eyelids.  Local anesthesia is used for the procedure, which can take from one to three hours to complete.

All surgeries have risks, so your consultation with Dr. McHugh about your surgery is very important. A few medical conditions may make blepharoplasty more risky, so please be sure to inform us if you have or your family has a history of thyroid problems, dry eye, high blood pressure or other circulatory disorders, cardiovascular disease or diabetes.

Dr. McHugh will discuss your expectations with you regarding the surgery. We find that patients with realistic expectations who are physically and emotionally healthy are the best candidates for blepharoplasty.

The minor complications that occasionally follow blepharoplasty include double or blurred vision for a few days, swelling at the corner of the eyelids, bruising and minor discomfort. These will subside as you heal.

If you feel that you can benefit from eyelid surgery, contact Dr. McHugh for a consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. How long will the results last from blepharoplasty?
Eyelid surgery can help give your eyes and face a more youthful appearance. The results are long-lasting and some may see permanent results for the rest of their lives.
  2. Will there be scars from the surgery?
Yes, you will have scars after eyelid surgery, but with time, these will gradually fade into a thin line that is barely noticeable. There are many cosmetics available on the market today that can help conceal these scars.
  3. Can both eyelids be treated at the same time?
Yes, both eyelids can be treated simultaneously.
  4. Will eyelid surgery affect my eyesight?
Eyelid surgery may affect your eyesight, but this is only temporary. You may notice excessive tearing and sensitivity to light while your eyes heal, and your eyelids may become dry. This is normal and can usually be remedied with prescription eye drops from Dr. McHugh.
  5. Can I go out in the sun after the procedure?
You may notice some light sensitivity following the procedure, so Dr. McHugh recommends wearing sunglasses while you are outdoors. Also, after surgery, sun protection is very important. Dr. McHugh advises using a sunscreen of at least SPF 15 while outside.
