Facelift

FaceliftTime can take its toll on any person. As we age, the daily stresses of life, sun exposure and gravity become more evident, especially in our facial appearance. And while nothing can stop the natural aging process, a facelift (rhytidectomy) can improve the signs of aging and “turn the clocks back,” so to speak.

A facelift is customized for each individual person and is most successful for people who show signs of aging but still have healthy bone structure and some elasticity in their skin. While facelifts can be an individual procedure, they are often performed in conjunction with other facial procedures, such as forehead lifts, eyelid surgery or rhinoplasty.

Dr. McHugh will review all of your expectations with you and help you determine the best course of treatment for you. Please disclose any current medical conditions you may have with Dr. McHugh, as these may impede healing post-surgery. He will also be available to answer any questions you may have and address any of your concerns.

Facelifts are performed under either local or general anesthesia, and Dr. McHugh will decide which one is best for you prior to the surgery. You may experience some discomfort following the surgery, but this can be alleviated with pain medication prescribed by Dr. McHugh. To help keep the swelling to a minimum, you may need to keep your head elevated. The initial wound healing takes around 5-10 days before the stitches will be removed. The incisions in your hairline may take a few days longer to fully heal.

Normal activities can normally be resumed a week or so after the surgery. It may take several weeks for the swelling and bruising to subside, but with time, this and your scars should slowly fade and your new, youthful appearance will shine through!

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Are there risks involved with having a facelift?
A facelift is a surgical procedure, so it will always come with some risk. When a facelift is performed by a qualified plastic surgeon, such as Dr. McHugh, complications can normally be kept to a minimum. Some risks may include nerve damage, hematoma and infection. Dr. McHugh will review these with you during your consultation.
  2. How long will the results last?
A facelift can turn back the clock 7-10 years. While many only have one facelift done, some may choose to undergo more facial plastic surgery in 15 years or so.
  3. Are the scars permanent?
Yes, the scars are permanent; however, the incisions are normally in the hairline and in the natural creases or lines of the face, where they are barely visible. The scars will fade with time, and there are many cosmetic products on the market today that can help conceal them as well.
  4. Can I go out in the sun following the procedure?
To maintain the results of your facelift, it’s important to take good care of your skin. You should always wear sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher when you’re outside, especially for the first six months following the surgery.
  5. Can I have any other facial procedures done at the same time?
Yes! Many may choose other types of facial plastic surgery, such as eyelid surgery and forehead lifts, when undergoing a facelift.
  6. Am I a good candidate for a facelift?
Good candidates for a facelift are those who are in good health, non-smokers and have signs of aging, but still have healthy bone structure and skin elasticity.
